HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR HEALTH DURING A SUMMER RELOCATION

1. Book your truck/move far ahead of time.

Because this is a popular moving season, renting your truck or hiring your movers ahead of time will help you avoid unpleasant surprises as the day approaches.

2. On a hot day, take extra care of your movers.

Including additional water, beverages, and cold wet towels on your moving checklist will help you gain good karma with your movers. They may have already relocated several houses that day and may yet have more to transport. This will keep kids safe, hydrated, and productive in the long run.

3. Stay safe in the sun.

Have plenty of water available, just like you would for any other summer activity. Moving yourself (and your family) is a strenuous activity that can cause you to break a sweat even in chilly weather. This is amplified throughout the summer. Water, hydration drinks, and light snacks should all be on your packing list.

4. Take extra precautions with children and pets.

There are few shady spots for kids and pets to remain out of the heat in a house full of boxes, movers, and moving equipment. Air conditioning will be inefficient because the doors will be open for long periods of time, and window units may have already been removed from houses without central air.

5. Take special care of any items that could be destroyed by the heat.

In hot moving trucks, candles are a leading cause of death. Worse, they have the potential to melt onto other items, causing irreversible damage. Chocolate and hard sweets have a habit of disappearing into children's clothing and belongings. Clothing that has been shrink-wrapped, as well as vinyl records and CDs, can be disastrous.

Moving in any season benefits from a lot of planning ahead of time. If you're using movers, ask them for advice and recommendations on how to prepare for a safe and effective summer move.
